The IPU condemns the Israeli “Regulation Law” and calls for its abolition
The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on Wednesday April 5th, 2017, unanimously condemned the legitimization of the settlement by the so called “Regulation Law” and called for the repeal of this law. The law violates international law and constitutes a great danger and negatively affects the peace process in the Middle East, Internationally, namely the achievement of a two-state solution.
The 136 IPU assembly, which has more than 630 MPS representing 132 parliaments participating, urged the IPU president and secretary general to pursue their efforts with the Israeli Knesset, and to present the follow-up results to the IPU upcoming session in October.
The IPU expressed its support for the statement issued last February by its President, Saber Choudry, in which he deplored the adoption of the regulation Law by the Israeli Knesset, which would eventually lead to increased instability and insecurity in the entire region and beyond, and called for its abolition as it contradicts the Two-State solution and disbands the Peace efforts in the region.
The Union commended the efforts of its President and Secretary-General to call upon the Knesset to repeal the said Law and tasked them to continue efforts with the Knesset to rescind the law, as it contradicts with the principles and objectives on which the IPU was established upon.
On the Syrian crisis, the Inter-Parliamentary Union called for the adoption of a dialogue between the various parties to reach political solutions to this crisis.
At the request of the head of the Palestinian delegation, Azzam Al-Ahmad, during his intervention before the IPU Governing Council while discussing a report on the violations of the human rights of parliamentarians around the world; the Chairperson of the IPU Committee on Human Rights of Parliamentarian announced a planned mission to the Middle East to review the situation of Palestinian parliamentarians in the Israeli prisons. Alahmad referred to the Israeli violations of the rights of the 12 Palestinian imprisoned MPs, including Marwan Barghouthi and Ahmad Sadat. He also requested monitoring the situation of other deputies who were recently arrested: Samira Halaiqa, Ibrahim Dahbour and Anwar Alzboon, noting that four of the members of the Legislative Council are subject to administrative detention, which is unacceptable internationally, who suffer banning family visits.
The IPU concluded its 136 assembly this evening in the Dhaka, with the participation of the Palestinian National Council delegation headed by Azzam al-Ahmad, and the membership of the Intisar Alwazeer, Qais Khader, Zuhair Sandouqa, Bilal Kassem, Abdul Rahim Barham, Omar Hamayel, Secretary General of the Legislative Council, Ibrahim Khreisheh, and Bashar Al Deek.
